(Watch) Wild Winter Weather Caught on Camera

Winter has arrived, and with it, a flurry of videos of cold weather mishaps, icy road incidents, and evidence of the incredible power of Mother Nature.

Here’s a selection of interesting videos we found around the internet today.

40-Car Pile-Up in Michigan…

Meanwhile, in New York…

This video, recorded by Wes Snyder, shows the effects of the snow at the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

This video from the Massachusetts coast shows the extent of flooding due to high winds as a massive storm slammed the US East Coast.

Last Friday, Dusty Jones of Alpine, Wyoming, posted this video of a dramatic rescue of about a dozen elk trapped in the ice near his home town on the southern border of Yellowstone National Park.

And, in an undisclosed location (Russia, maybe)…

Speaking of Russia…

Maybe those of us in the US and Canada shouldn’t complain too much about winter…Murodo-daira of Tateyama in Japan has some of the heaviest snows in the world, reaching about seven meters (23 ft) on average, writes Extreme Weather:

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is an international mountain sightseeing route some 90 kilometers (56 miles) long. The route goes across the 3,000-meter-high North Alpine mountains, the so-called “roof of Japan,” and connects Toyama and Shinano Omachi.

Since the lines opened in June 1971, the Tateyama mountain area has been transformed from an isolated spot into one of the nation’s best sightseeing areas, where a million guests visit every year. In particular, the snow mantle at Otani, a five-minute walk from Murodo Station, sometimes gets more than 20 meters (65.6 ft) because of snowdrifts. The famous “Snow Walls” are formed by expelling this heavy snow, and the 500-meter-long area with such snow walls is open to sightseers from mid-April to late May. The snow wall was 15 meter high that year.

And finally, here’s what to do if you find yourself in this terrifying cold-weather situation…

Stay safe and warm out there!
